Hi...I'm new here and just bought a contact that has incorrect information. Not sure if I should report abuse or click on one of the links for "Not at the company," "bad phone," or "bad email." Any suggestions?

Generally, you will know abuse when you see it. Sorry to not be more specific but, for the most part, incorrect or invalid information was either valid at one time or was entered with the belief that it was correct. If the email bounces, vclick on bad email, if the phone is wrong, bad number, if you contact the company and the person is gone, "no longer at company". Welcome to Jigsaw and feel free to ask more questions on these boards.

KindDate provides a great description. Abuse needs to be evaluated by the member first before reporting. Simple mistakes and data going out-of-date is something that happens on a daily basis, but would not be abuse. Now, if you run across a contact named Big Bird with the e-mail address "big_bird@acme.com"... that's clearly abuse. Adding companies that don't exist, or adding a company name of "Microsoft" and a domain of www.asdfl;ik3231309a8sfd0-9283.com is clearly abuse.
Trivial updates such as changing industries or names to one thing, then to change them back just to get points is abuse as well.
These trivial updates (gray areas) can be tough to decide, which is why Jigsaw has a great program called "Data Defenders". This consists of top members meeting strict criteria to participate and we can then check for abuse, and have the ability to lock that member from the system. This is a fairly new program, but I can report we have locked over 100+ member accounts for abuse.
There are also times where we cannot determine if the abuse is deliberate or accidental, so when an instance like this happens, JS staff will reach out to the member directly to inquire about the suspected actions. We always try to give the benefit of the doubt, as the more members Jigsaw has, the more data, and the cleaner the data will be.

Generally, you report abuse when there is a pattern. If you click on the name of the member who entered the bad data, you will see that member's profile. On the right you will see a summary of activities, and clicking on the number after each activity type will give you the whole list. You may be able to see a pattern right away. For example, it may be immediately obvious that all his contacts are named after cartoon characters - or he's entered fifty contacts in twelve different states for a company that you know has only one location. That would be abuse.
It's a little more tedious to check company data - but if you think a member is posting bogus company updates, you can click on the "company update" number and link to the entire list of companies. When you look at the company record, click on "Company Version History" and put your cursor over the card icon to the left of the update that particular member made - and you'll see whether or not he's doing something like changing all the companies to "agriculture and mining - other" just to get the points.
One more thing - if you see weird data added/updated by Puzzlemaster or Superdeduper, don't report abuse, just update the contact for points. Those are Jigsaw bots, and although on balance they're a positive influence, sometimes they get it wildly wrong.
I cannot give you the formula for success, but I can give you the formula for failure--which is: Try to please everybody.

Sometimes the email addresses are correct but the email will still bounce back due to spam blockers that the company installs. Some of the spam blockers that I've come across are Postini ( which is a Google product), Barracuda, and Bigfish.com (which is a Microsoft product). Hope that this is helpful information.

Adding on to the original question: Is there a way to report abuse in the company information? I've been coming across a lot of companies who have abused wikis. Was wondering if there is a specific place to report those.

I have come across a user here that has over 2 million contact updates, but no contact adds, company adds, etc. member since Nov 2011? They have sent 2 of my contacts to the graveyard with bad email addys, which are still valid. Do you think this might be abuse?? LOL
